Use a Sewing Machine

Following is a brief guideline to use a machine for sewing:

•    Select a straight stitch and a medium stitch length. Check the manual for how to do it on your machine. The points are set by turning the knob on the lower right side of the machine until it clicks into place. Always set the point with the needle up and out of the fabric, since it can move the needle. You can read more by clicking here.

•    The straight design is used for most of the seams. The other most common design is the zigzag pattern, which is usually used to prevent fraying of the edges.

•    Practice on some scrap material. For your first sewing experience, choose a simple material fabric. Do not use a very heavy fabric for your first attempts at sewing machine. Denim and flannel can be difficult to sew, because they are too thick when stacked on different layers.

•    Put the fabric under the needle. Sew with most of the material to the left of the machine; accumulating mostly on the right side can create seams disordered.

•    Lowers the presser foot on the fabric. There is a lever behind or to the side of the needle assembly which raises and lowers the presser foot. Check out MySewingAdventure.com for more tips.

•    If you give the fabric a little tug while the presser foot is lowered, you feel that the machine controlling it tightly enough. While sewing, the machine uses a conveyor under the presser foot to advance the material at the correct speed. There is no need to pull the fabric through the machine; in fact, by pulling you may bend the needle or damage the work. You can adjust the speed and the stitch length on the machine.

•    You can use the bar on the top right of the machine for spinning or to move the needle by hand.

•    The machine moves the fabric automatically away from you. You can "drive" the fabric in a straight line or curve by moving it through the machine by hand. Practice sewing in a straightis preferred.

•    Do not force or pull the material while moving under the needle. This may cause the elongation of the fabric or needle breakage or clogging of the points in the coil. If you notice that the fabric is not moving fast enough, press the pedal harder, adjust the stitch length.

•    Start with a simple project. When you have tried different types of stitches and you feel comfortable with the basics, try to sew something innovative.
